Moira Gagnon, who has led the senior varsity girls’ basketball team at Kennebecasis Valley High School in Quispamsis since 2013, will take over the Seawolves women’s program this fall, replacing Kevin Munroe, who served as UNBSJ’s head coach for 13 seasons as part of a 20-year tenure at the university.

Gagnon has won four New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association senior girls’ provincial championships in her 20 years of coaching high school girls at KVHS and Rothesay High School (two at each school), and was the 2012-13 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association coach of the year.

As a UNB alumnae and a former varsity athlete, I am excited to be a part of this basketball program.

As a player, she suited up for Montreal’s Dawson College (CEGEP) before playing four years at UNB, helping her teams to a pair of Atlantic University Athletic Association championships (1977-78 and 1978-79) and earning berths at the national championships. She was also named the female athlete of the year at UNB during her tenure.

“Coaching at UNB Saint John is extremely appealing,” said Gagnon in a press release. “As a UNB alumnae and a former varsity athlete, I am excited to be a part of this basketball program. I had a great experience playing at UNB and see this coaching opportunity as a chance to give back and hopefully provide the athletes with a fun and successful experience.”

Last season, the Seawolves went 4-14 in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association women’s basketball conference before falling to the University of King’s College in the quarter-final round of the playoffs.

The Seawolves will hold try outs in mid September, with their first regular season game tentatively scheduled for Oct. 25 when they travel to St. Thomas University.
